Applesauce Walnut Bread

Ingredients
  

Topping
  • 1/4 cup walnuts chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar packed
Bread
  • 1 1/4 cups applesauce jarred or homemade
  • 1 cup granulated white sugar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3 Tablespoons milk
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 cup walnuts chopped

Equipment

  • 1 9x5x3 inch loaf pan
  • 2 Mixing Bowl
  • 1 Large Spoon

Method
 

Topping
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9x5x3 inch loaf pan and set aside. In a small bowl combine topping ingredients. Set aside.

  1. In a large bowl stir together the applesauce, granulated sugar, oil, eggs and milk until thoroughly mixed.

  2. In a separate bowl stir together all of the remaining ingredients except for the nuts. Add the dry ingredients to the applesauce mixture and stir until combined. Fold in the nuts and pour into your prepared pan. Sprinkle the sugar topping over the batter.

  3. Bake until the top cracks open and a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean, checking after 60 minutes and adding additional time gradually. Do not over bake. Allow to cool 10 minutes in the pan then run a knife around the edges to loosen before removing to a wire rack to finish cooling.

Notes

This applesauce bread tastes great as is but for something special, spread softened cream cheese over a slice.  For a different texture use chunky applesauce.  Cover tightly to store.
